Abstract

Objective: To validate the relevance of the Mexican automotive industry in the national productive structure since the signing of the FTA in 1994. Justification: The automotive industry is one of the most dynamic and important in the world, both in the quantity of product it generates and, in the employment, and wages, it contributes to economic activity in key sectors of the economy. Methodology: An analysis is carried out at an aggregate level, with an Input-Output Matrix with 56 economic subsectors, with respect to their production and foreign trade levels, and disaggregated, using methodologies applicable to input-output matrices: the direct linkage methodologies of Chenery-Watanabe, total linkages of Rasmussen, specific linkages of Streit and the non-hypothetical extraction method of Strassert and Dietzenbacher-van der Linden are used. Results: Although the results of the FTA are positive, there is heterogeneity between the subsectors. Conclusions: The consolidation of Mexico as the second largest producer in the North American region positioned Mexico as an important player internationally and with a key automotive industry in the national economy.
